Seth Inspies (again)

Seth Godin writes (again and again) in “The Icarus Deception” - “Make Better Art”.

The take-aways from the book are numerous but one I keep coming back to is the idea that art is a mindset, not a skillset. Dedicate yourself to a craft. Create beautifully. Share it with the world. I’ve failed spectacularly at the sharing part. Ideation and the creative process are something which come naturally. The sharing part is a struggle. It’s that damn liazard brain. Sitting in the background quietly whispering: what if…

Invariablly, it ends in a pivot. A new shiny idea to chase. Start back at the beginning - a safe place that is far away from the vulnerability of criticism, judgmnet, and possible failure.

And possible success.

No longer.

Making Art - The Process

I’ve never been one to lay down resolutions for a new calendar year. It’s a bit of a coincidence that I’ finish reading, and being inspired by, The Icrarus Deception at the end of 2024. Not willing to let a bit of inspiration go unwasted, there are some process adjustments that are in order for the future.

1. Write

It’s a form of sharing. A way to get out of the comfort zone of building and creating. Without sharing, I haven’t created art.

2. Play

“Being productive” is a trap. Learning new technologies, technicuques and tools opens the pathway to new and exciting creations. Shipping is important, but so is the process of learning through play and experimentation.

3. Connect

Connect with other creators. Build software that connects people. Simple.

4. Ruthlessly Prioritize

There aren’t enough hours in a day. Make the most of what’s available.

This is all well and good. Inspiration, hype, and enthusiasm. Now it’s time to put all that energy to use.

Let’s create. 🎨
